Software Mobile Apps Great Android Apps for Tracking North Carolina Weather

Recently, Mother Nature has brought North Carolina some pretty challenging weather. From hurricanes to tornados and blizzards to ice storms, the chances of having the power knocked out is very likely making it difficult to get a weather report or other critical information. With the proliferation of smart phones, like the Apple's iPhone and phones using Google's Android OS, getting access to visually critical information has become accessible. Below, I have shared three Android Apps that I have used to stay informed about the weather.

NBC17 WX Android Weather AppApp: NBC17 WX
Developer: WSI Corporation
Price: FREE
Required: Android 2.1+
User Ratings: 4.4 out of 5 Stars

WNCN-NBC17 offers an incredible Android app with enhanced radar maps with street level accuracy, weather alerts and forecasts and much more. I really enjoy being able to see a storm's progress with the time loop feature. Check it out here in the Google Android Market: NBC17-WX

The Weather Channel Android AppApp: The Weather Channel
Developer: The Weather Channel
Price: FREE
Required: Android 1.6+
User Rating: 4.0 out of 5 Stars

The Weather Channel app for android is one of the most downloaded weather apps available in the Android Market. It offers some similar features to the NBC17 WX app but included features like video of their weather reporters and gives you access to upload video to their iWitness news desk. If you are a Verizon 4G-LTE subscriber, the Weather Channel is giving you access to special features you can read about here

Hurricane Software Android AppApp: Hurricane Software
Developer: HurricanSoftware.com
Price: FREE
Required: Android 2.1+
User Rating: 4.0 out of 5 Stars

If you're looking for an advanced hurricane tracking mobile app then Hurricane Software is a great option. This app brings in radar satellite feeds of various locations across the western hemisphere from NOAA. In addition, the app will keep you up to date with the latest weather alerts issued by NOAA. While the app is not the prettiest, it does bring in some of the best raw data for those hurricane enthusiasts.

The apps listed above are not intended to be used for emergencies. If you are in North Carolina and you experience a power outage, discover downed power lines or blown transformers, contact the local power company. Here are a couple numbers to save as a contact in your phone:

Progress Energy Outage Hotline: 1-800-419-6356
Progress Outage Map for the Carolinas: https://www.progress-energy.com/app/outagemaps/carolinas.aspx

Duke Energy Outage Hotline: 1-800-POWERON (1-800-769-3766)
